REAL NAME: SHAN SOFIA FONG MIRAGE

ALIASES: Doctor Mirage.

ABILITIES: Shan can see and speak with ghosts, project herself in other places (including the Deadside), and is an expert in the occult.

KNOWN ASSOCIATIONS: Li Hwen Mirage; Punk Mambo; Eternal Warrior; Shadowman; Abettors.

Shan Fong was four years old the first time she saw a ghost. Her parents — both anthropologists — took her abilities in stride, and took her to a therapist who taught her how to cut off the ghosts’ feelings from her own.

After studying the occult and parapsychology for years, she enrolled in a specialized academy where she met Li Hwen Mirage. The two eventually became world-renowned paranormal investigators and co-stars of a popular reality show, all while falling in love and getting married.

Hwen died fighting a monster summoned by ignorant cultists, drowned at sea. Shan almost died too, but she survived. Unable to contact Hwen’s spirit, she fell into a deep depression for the next five years, until Leo Bern, their friend and agent, convinced her to return to work.

To save her home from foreclosure Shan took on a wealthy client named Linton March, who hired her to remove a spell that bound him to an otherworldly servant known only as the Prisoner. She agreed partly because the creature told her doing so would help her locate Hwen’s spirit.

Shan projected her spirit into the Deadside, where she encountered the Pale Mistress, a spirit of the ocean domains that imprisoned her husband, forcing him to play the piano for their entertainment. While she bargained for Hwen’s release in exchange for his Staff of Spirits, several of Linton’s fellow occultists kidnapped her body to prevent her from breaking his binding spell that extended all their lives. To make matters worse a demon lord named Ivros amassed an army to conquer the living realm. Ultimately, Shan and Hwen defeated both threats and, finally, reunited in the Liveside.

While Shan and Hwen could communicate they could not touch, which drove them to find the means to restore Hwen’s corporeal self. Their search led them to the Vita Secunda scroll, which brought them into conflict with the spirit of Denis de Walt, a powerful occultist from the 1920s. Ultimately, Shan effectively imprisoned de Walt back in the scroll.

Next in their journey to be together again, Shan and Hwen encountered the last priestess of Isis, the key to life and death in Ancient Egypt. While trying to harness the mysteries of the goddess, Hwen and all the other ghosts disappeared from Shan’s sight. Through a trip to the Deadside guided by young Grace Lugo, acting supposedly under Hwen’s directions, returning everyone else, Shan is still looking for her husband.

She worked with Shadowman, Persephone, Punk Mambo and Eternal Warrior to stop the threat of the Book of Shadows. A soul-devouring entity from another world manifesting in the shape of a book, it was wielded by Exarch Fane, a necromancer that the Eternal Warrior had come across in the Veil, the realm from which he must fight his way back to life. The dark tome was left in the custody of the Abettors. For some time now, Punk Mambo has been teaching Shan about voodoo.

OTHER DETAILS: Hwen designed and warded Shan’s Doctor Mirage costume before he died to protect her from supernatural influences.
